The Kingsholm: Environmental Statement

Environmental & Mission Statement

We consider ourselves most privileged to live in the beautiful surroundings of Torquay which give us the opportunity to run the business we have chosen. We aim to provide our guests with a high standard of accommodation and customer care at a competitive tariff.

At the same time we wish to minimise the impact of our business on the environment of Torquay, Devon and the wider environment of land, sea and air. We invite our guests to support our efforts to run a green tourism business in which we aim to minimise our consumption of resources, especially water and energy, and our production of waste.

Energy

We have invested in a new (2006), energy efficient condensing boiler and a new tumble drier. There are thermostats on all the bedroom radiators so heating can be turned off when they are not occupied.

During room servicing we turn off all TVs and showers rather than consuming energy on “standby”. Where possible we use low energy bulbs and timers to reduce consumption by lights. The computer is off when not in use.

Waste & Recycling

We sort our rubbish and guests rubbish in order to recycle cans, plastic bottles, glass, paper and cardboard. We compost vegetable waste from the kitchen and have made our own mulch by shredding palm tree leaves.

We re-use paper for internal paperwork.

Packaging

We use 'bags for life' for shopping and prefer to choose fresh products with minimal packaging. We do not use mini-packs in the dining room and have reduced the use of these packs in the bedrooms by providing hand soap and body shampoos in dispensers.

Water

All of our rooms have showers. We work with a small and large washing machine according to the size of washes. Alison waters with a watering can rather than a hose.

We are reorganising our garden so as to have fewer areas in need of watering and to position the water butt for efficient use. We wash our car with a bucket not with a hose.

Paper

We are improving our use of email and internet to reduce our use of paper.

Suppliers

We use local suppliers for our eggs and meat. We will be working to increase our use of local produce.

If you are visiting you can help by:

  • Turning off your lights, tv and shower, and turning down the radiator when you go out
  • If you shop in Torquay decline plastic bags, shoe boxes and coat hangers
  • Eat in and avoid the need to dispose of takeaway rubbish
  • Come by public transport and use the local buses, land train, ferries, trains and steam trains
