| The English Riviera and Torbay |
Torbay, once an anchorage for Britain’s sailing navy and now a cruise ship stopover, was christened the English Riviera when Victorian gentry began to holiday in Torquay. Here you can enjoy three contrasting towns, plus coast and countryside filled with places of interest.
Torquay, a favourite of Agatha Christie, offers urban entertainments: shops, restaurants and theatres. Paignton with a pier and harbour has long family-friendly beaches. Brixham is a traditional fishing harbour.
The magnificent scenery of Torbay fills 22 miles of cliffs and beaches accessible along the South West Coast Path. In addition to walking, swimming and sea fishing, outdoor activities include water sports such as sailing, canoeing and diving.
There is a place of interest for you whatever your interest – the geology of limestone and sandstone cliffs, the archaeology of a World Heritage Site, the birds and animals of Living Coasts and Paignton Zoo, the woods, farms and headlands managed by Torbay Coast and Countryside, the industrial archaeology of quarries, piers, lighthouses, railways and harbours, architecture from Torre Abbey to Victorian crescents, military and naval history, and literature. |
